Rosie

My skin is still tingling from what happened in Jared’s bedroom. It makes it impossible to concentrate on anything but the scent of him still clinging to my skin. I’d cleaned myself off after he stalked out but the ache won’t go away. Worse still, I’m sure that everyone in the room can see the pulse pounding in my throat. It just won’t even out.

There’s a part of me that still refuses to believe it happened. I mean, how? Why? Why would Jared want me? Not for the first time tonight, I sneak a glance outside where he’s leaning forward on the balcony chatting to his brother.

They look alike. Both tall and broad with golden skin and hair. Sunshine, I think. They are the embodiment of sunshine. Everything about me warms when I’m near him. When he kissed me, I thought I was going to catch fire. And then he said those words that melted me from the inside out.

That’s when I heard Daniel’s voice. “Nothing about you has changed in years,” he’d said. “It’s so utterly boring.”

It was like something grabbed a hold of my heart and yanked. Because when Daniel said it to me, my mind became blanketed with rage and humiliation. But the thought of Jared ever saying those things is unimaginable. If we don’t get sexually involved, then there will never be that chance. I would rather have him as just a friend than not at all. At least that’s what I keep telling myself as the ache between my legs continues to torture me.

“You look like you’re deep in thought,” Anna says. She plonks down beside me on the couch. I blush as her eyes crinkle at the edges. Thank goodness she can’t see into my mind. I might have been imagining some very not platonic stuff involving her older brother.

“I’m fine,” I say. She hands me a glass of lemonade and tucks her sandy blonde hair behind her ear. She reaches out and pats me on my thigh. Then she burst into laughter. Anna and Liam have been doing it all night. Touching me gingerly and then pulling away. Conversely, Jared hasn’t come near me since the bedroom.

“Sorry,” she chuckles. “It’s just hard to believe after all these years that you’re a real person.”

It dawns on me what she’s referring to. “He talked about me?” I can’t help the excited little hitch in my throat.

“Incessantly. We all thought he was making you up.”

She’s so bubbly it’s hard not to be swept up in her amusement. Like her brothers, she has a kind of magnetic aura. “It’s really nice to meet you and Liam as well. He talks about you guys a lot.”

She grows quiet. Out of the corner of my eye I see her plucking imaginary lint from the couch cushion. “You know before you guys met, he hardly spoke at all?”

I can barely believe my ears. “I don’t know if I believe that.”

My attention returns to the two men outside. Anna smiles at me.
